This is one of our newest safaris, giving the opportunity to the more adventurous travelers to immerse themselves in the ‘real’ Tanzania. It incorporates Mkomazi park, plus several days hiking in the Usambara Mountains, with an option to continue on to Pangani and the coast.
Drive from Moshi to Mkomazi park and spend the afternoon exploring the Mkomazi landscapes, birding and spotting the wide variety of animals. Overnight in a park campsite or tented camp.
After an early morning birding walk, continue by vehicle southeast to the Usambara Mountains. Spend the afternoon getting acquainted with the local Sambaa people and visiting the market.
Set off early on your hike, enjoying the cool climate and lovely hill landscapes. There are many possible destinations, including Mambo Viewpoint, where you can look over the Tsavo plains into Kenya. Overnight at a local-style lodge.
Continue hiking, with overnight as on Day 3.
Return to the starting point of your hike. Drive back to Moshi, or continue on to the coast.
Late June through October, late December to early March.
