Tanzania - Maji Moto

Tanzania's Maji Moto Camp takes its name from the nearby hot springs. Here you may catch a glimpse of Lake Manyara's remarkable tree-climbing lions and stately pelicans or stare in wonder at the elephants. The safari camp alludes to some of the Arabian influences in Africa, with ten classic twin bedded, (all convertible to double beds) safari tents and en suite shower-bathrooms, basking in the dreamy shade of the forest canopy. Maji Moto's public areas include a reception, small curio shop and gallery and open air dining area.

Lake Manyara:
Lake Manyara is a soda lake that receives much of its water from underground sources originating from the Ngorongoro escarpment. Here, the great wall of the Rift Valley is at its most impressive, with the escarpment of rock dropping over 500m down to the lake.

Lake Manyara is typical of the chain of lakes that line the Rift Valley from Ethiopia to Malawi. Like Lakes Natron, Magadi, Naivasha, Nakuru and Turkana, Manyara was formed over millions of years as the Rift Valley grew ever wider and streams spilled down its continually eroding slopes. Manyara has no outlet, so the foaming water is trapped, and subject to high levels of evaporation. This results in salt accumulation and the tell-tale signs of crusty white soda on the shore. The expanse of water fluctuates with the wet and dry seasons. It is typically 50km long and 16km wide, but has been known to rise up and flood the roads - or shrink back to a point where it is possible to walk across.
